Not Everything Makes the Cut
There are hundreds of thousands of lighting products available to buy online. We stock a fraction of them — deliberately. Every fitting, every wall light, every pendant and sconce on the Scarlett Lighting website has been through a selection process. It’s there because it met our standards, not because it was available or inexpensive to source.
That process isn’t complicated, but it is consistent. Here’s exactly what we look for — and why it matters to you as a customer.
1. Build Quality That Lasts
The first thing we assess is physical quality: the weight of the fitting, the consistency of the finish, the precision of the joints and fixings. A well-made light fitting should feel substantial in the hand. Covers should sit flush. Finishes should be even, without pitting, streaking, or variation between units.
We pay particular attention to finishes that are prone to inconsistency — brushed brass, aged bronze, and matte black are all beautiful when done well and disappointing when done poorly. We only stock suppliers whose finish quality is consistent batch to batch, because a fitting that looks different from its product photography is a fitting that gets returned.
We also look at the longevity of materials. Powder-coated aluminium, solid brass, and stainless steel age well. Low-grade zinc alloys and untreated iron do not — particularly in outdoor or bathroom applications. If a fitting won’t hold up over years of normal use, it doesn’t belong in our range.
2. Electrical Safety Compliance
Every product we sell must comply with UK electrical safety regulations, including the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, and carry the appropriate UKCA or CE marking. This is a legal requirement — but compliance alone isn’t enough for us.
We also verify that IP ratings are accurate and independently tested, not self-declared. An IP44 rating on a bathroom fitting means nothing if the seal degrades after six months of steam exposure. We work with suppliers who can demonstrate their IP ratings through third-party testing, and we check that the ratings stated on product listings match the physical specification of the fitting.
For outdoor fittings, we assess UV resistance, corrosion protection, and gasket quality — the details that determine whether a fitting still looks good after two British winters.
3. Honest, Useful Product Data
A fitting can be beautifully made and still be the wrong choice for a customer if the product information is incomplete or inaccurate. We consider accurate data a core part of what we sell.
Before any product goes live on our website, we verify and document:
- IP rating and zone suitability
- Lumen output and colour temperature
- Dimmer compatibility (and which dimmer types are recommended)
- Bulb type, cap fitting, and maximum wattage
- Exact dimensions, including projection from the wall
- Installation requirements and back box compatibility
- Finish description with accurate colour matching
This takes time. But it means that when a customer asks “will this work with my existing dimmer?” or “is this suitable for Zone 2 in my bathroom?”, we can give a definitive answer — and so can they, before they buy.
4. Aesthetic Coherence Across the Range
We think carefully about how products sit together, not just how they look in isolation. A customer furnishing multiple rooms, or looking for fittings that coordinate across an open-plan space, needs to be able to trust that ‘brushed brass’ in one product genuinely matches ‘brushed brass’ in another.
We curate our range with this in mind. Finishes are consistent across suppliers where possible. Design families — products that share a visual language, proportion, or material palette — are grouped and cross-referenced so customers can build a coherent scheme without guesswork.
We also edit actively. Products that no longer meet our quality standards, or that have drifted from the aesthetic direction of the range, are removed. The range evolves — but always with coherence as a guiding principle.
5. Supplier Relationships Built on Accountability
We work with a select group of suppliers whose standards align with ours. That means manufacturers and distributors who can answer technical questions accurately, who maintain consistent production quality, and who stand behind their products when issues arise.
We don’t list products from suppliers we haven’t vetted, and we don’t add new products to the range simply because they’re trending or competitively priced. A new product earns its place by meeting the same criteria as everything else — quality, compliance, data accuracy, and aesthetic fit.
This approach means our range grows more slowly than a marketplace. We think that’s a feature, not a limitation.
6. Real-World Testing Where It Counts
For categories where performance in use matters most — outdoor fittings, bathroom lights, and dimmable LEDs in particular — we go beyond specification sheets. We test fittings in real conditions: outdoor products are assessed for weather resistance, bathroom fittings are checked for seal integrity, and dimmable products are tested across a range of compatible dimmers to confirm smooth, flicker-free performance.
Products that perform well on paper but disappoint in practice don’t make it into the range. It’s a straightforward standard, but one that requires genuine investment in the process.
What This Means for You
When you buy from Scarlett Lighting, you’re not browsing an algorithm-ranked catalogue of third-party listings. You’re shopping a range that has been assembled with care, verified for safety, and described accurately — by a team that understands lighting and takes responsibility for every product it sells.
That’s the standard we hold ourselves to. And it’s why we’d rather stock 500 products we believe in than 5,000 we don’t.
