How to Style Pendant Lights in Your Kitchen

Why Pendant Lights Work So Well in Kitchens

Pendant lights have become the go-to choice for kitchen lighting — and for good reason. They combine task lighting with decorative impact, drawing the eye upward and adding personality to what is often the most-used room in the home. Whether you’re lighting a kitchen island, a dining area, or a breakfast bar, the right pendant can completely transform the space.

With over 50 pendant styles in our collection, we’ve helped hundreds of UK homeowners find the perfect fit. Here’s everything you need to know to get it right.

Getting the Height Right

Height is the single most important factor when hanging kitchen pendants. Too low and they obstruct sightlines; too high and they lose their visual impact and task-lighting effectiveness.

Over a Kitchen Island or Worktop

  • Hang the bottom of the pendant 75–85cm above the worktop surface.
  • This keeps the light close enough to illuminate the work surface without being at eye level when seated or standing.
  • For pendants with open bottoms (e.g., cage or bowl styles), err toward the higher end to avoid glare.

Over a Dining Table

  • Hang the bottom of the pendant 70–80cm above the table surface.
  • This creates an intimate pool of light over the table without blocking conversation across it.
  • For very large or statement pendants, you can go slightly higher — up to 90cm — to keep the fitting in proportion.

In Open-Plan Spaces with High Ceilings

If your kitchen has ceilings above 2.7m, you may need to adjust. Add approximately 10cm of height per 30cm of ceiling above standard 2.4m to maintain the correct visual proportion.

How Many Pendants Do You Need?

The number of pendants depends on the length of your island or table and the size of each fitting.

For Kitchen Islands

  • Up to 120cm island — 1 large pendant or 2 small pendants.
  • 120–180cm island — 2 medium pendants.
  • 180–240cm island — 3 small-to-medium pendants.
  • 240cm+ island — 3 large or 4 medium pendants.

Spacing Between Pendants

Leave 60–80cm between the centres of each pendant. This gives enough breathing room to avoid a cluttered look while maintaining visual cohesion. For very large pendants (40cm+ diameter), increase spacing to 80–100cm.

Choosing the Right Size Pendant

Scale matters enormously. A pendant that’s too small over a large island looks lost; one that’s too large in a compact kitchen feels oppressive.

  • Small pendants (under 20cm diameter) — Best used in multiples of 3 or more. Ideal for compact kitchens or breakfast bars.
  • Medium pendants (20–35cm diameter) — The most versatile size. Work well in pairs over standard islands and dining tables.
  • Large pendants (35cm+ diameter) — Make a bold statement. Use one over a small island or two over a longer one. Suit open-plan spaces and high ceilings.

Matching Pendant Style to Your Kitchen

Shaker and Traditional Kitchens

Look for pendants with warm metal finishes — brushed brass, antique bronze, or aged copper — and classic silhouettes like bell shapes, lanterns, or fluted glass. These complement the handcrafted aesthetic of a shaker kitchen beautifully.

Contemporary and Handleless Kitchens

Opt for clean geometric forms in matte black, brushed nickel, or concrete. Cylinder, cone, and dome pendants with minimal detailing suit the sleek lines of a modern kitchen.

Industrial and Open-Plan Kitchens

Cage pendants, Edison-style bulb holders, and raw metal finishes work perfectly in industrial-inspired spaces. Exposed filament bulbs add warmth and character.

Coastal and Scandi Kitchens

Rattan, wicker, and natural material pendants bring texture and warmth. Pair with white or pale wood cabinetry for a relaxed, Scandi-coastal feel.

Practical Considerations

Bulb Type and Colour Temperature

For kitchens, choose warm white LED bulbs (2700–3000K) for a welcoming, flattering light. Avoid cool white (4000K+) over dining areas — it can feel clinical and unflattering for food and skin tones.

Dimmer Compatibility

Always check that your chosen pendant and bulb combination is dimmer-compatible. Dimmable kitchen pendants allow you to shift from bright task lighting while cooking to a softer, more atmospheric setting for dining — a simple upgrade that adds real versatility.

Ceiling Rose and Cable Length

Most pendants come with a standard cable length of 1–1.5m. For high ceilings or very low-hanging installations, check whether the cable can be extended or shortened. Many of our pendants include adjustable cables for flexibility.
